Der Ostwind

Wolfgand Von Kellermann is a WWI German fighter pilot in search of a worthy oponent...

This was another of Kohl’s films.  we had both been working on it for a few years, and deadlines kept getting pushed back for a number of reasons.

This time Kohl was in Arizona for most of my work, so collaboration was much more efficient.

The biggest challenge about this score was the fact that we couldn’t afford a live orchestra and choir, which my score called for.  We were given funds to purchase a copy of the composition program Finale, (though neither of us was allowed to be the owner under the agreement) with the Gariton Personal Orchestra as a sound bank. I’m still not sure whether I spent more time actually composing the music, or wrestling with the program to get it to play the music the way I intended.  In the end we had to go back to Orangewood Studios and record the trombones and trumpets live, because those particular samples were so poor.

The choir was made up of a small group of friends who met and rehearsed on weekends.  the recording was done in a a church, in parts (men and women separately), with two layers of each part to fill out the sound. All the recording was, again, done by Marcus Howard, and I take my hat off to him for what he was able to do with so little to work with.

The final product leaves much to be desired in the way of overall sound, but that’s what happens on a low budget.
